about

Original Liner Notes
Thanks to my wife Lilia for her loving support and to Eric,Michael,Leco,Conor, and Ben for all the hard work of preparing for this recording: the shows, the rehearsals, and the help
with charts of course. It's been exciting to combine the music I love from Brazil with the sounds of jazz I have around me and make a personal fusion, finding the parallels, the bends in the rhythm and harmony that tell a similar story. The dedicated musicians in both countries go through the same struggles, trying to thrive while negotiating the pitfalls of where we must play and work, what pittance of funding is given
by our governments for the expressive musical arts like Jazz and Choro
. Some of us haven't survived along the way like my friend the singer
Ana Fonteles who passed too early in 2004. Two pieces on this
recording were written for her. There is the blues and the streets
we live in Brazilian music. There is "saudades", the swamp and sea in
Jazz. The whole range of urban experience is enshrined in the music
from both countries. They don't need to be fused just to pack more
airplanes to Brazil or feed racist sexual fantasies.
I hope you the listener will be inspired by the music here to check out
a Pixinguinha or Nicanor Texeira, or maybe a Henry Threadgill or
Hasan Ibn Ali, pairings of well known and obscure musicians
whose music strive for the highest aesthetic without disconnect from
community, with awareness of the warring demons invested in
fragmentation of those still human. There are many of us still making
music with humor and humility and reverence for improvised
expression. I'm fortunate to have had some of the best folks from
New York and Rio in my life amongst other cities and as the years pass
, even dry, dark years, they've kept me inspired to play and write.
Enjoy this recording. They'll surely be more to come!
