Choro is Brazilian instrumental music parallel to Jazz with a long history and can be characterized by compact compositions, with improvised counterpoint, and African and European Influences. It speaks of the new world, of immigration of poor Europeans plus the forced kidnapping of Africans, the often happy fusion of many different peoples genetically, musically, spiritually. (My Maxixe composition - "Happy as a Greek Brazilian Jew" is in homage to this). Choro is Art music, Bar music, a music of bohemians and working people with its definite Mecca in Rio de Janeiro but is played all throughout Brazil.
